The City of Crystal Lake is a charming community of 42,142 residents in southeast McHenry County. During the early 1900’s, Crystal Lake was known for the production of terra cotta architectural tile and brick. Several historic downtown buildings display this material and the craftsmanship of the era.
In 2012, the City of Crystal Lake received an Illinois Governor’s Hometown Award for the Three Oaks Recreation Area. Formerly a vacant quarry, this area now contains a high-quality recreational lake. There is a marina for the rental of non-motorized watercraft, along with a swimming beach, walking trails and picnic grounds. Fishing is allowed from the shoreline.
The Crystal Lake Park District has a spectrum of youth sports programs, recreational activities and facilities, senior programs and special events. Of unique note is the whimsical “Ugliest Yard Contest” that awards a tree seedling to the winner.
Commerce in Crystal Lake includes independent retail stores that occupy the revitalized downtown, as well as recognized national chains in newer areas of development. The city saw significant growth during the past 20 years, but sound planning and development policies enabled manageable expansion.
Residents have access to public transportation via the Metra station and PACE bus line. Crystal Lake is within reach of several popular destinations:
