The holiday season is here! Whether you’re looking for big city lights or hometown traditions, these holiday events in Chicagoland will cheer the whole family! Please be sure to check the event websites to confirm dates and times before heading out. Hours of operation can change due to staffing issues, adverse weather, etc.

Nov 16 – Jan 8: Christmas Around the World – Holidays of Light. The Museum of Science and Industry immerses you in holiday traditions from around the globe. See the website to plan your visit!

Nov. 18 – Dec 24: Christkindlmarket. Bigger and better than ever, with locations in Aurora, Wrigleyville and downtown Chicago! Experience an open-air, European-style holiday market with family-friendly events. Delicious food, internationally-sourced gifts, and more.  

Nov. 18 – March 1: (weather permitting) Free Ice Skating at McCormick-Tribune Ice Rink, Millennium Park, Chicago. If you need to rent skates, a skate rental fee applies, and you must reserve your skating time online. See all the details at the website!

Nov. 19 – Jan 1: Zoolights at Lincoln Park Zoo. See millions of holiday lights and amazing displays.

Nov. 19 – Dec 18: Vintage Holidays in Long Grove. Horse-drawn carriage rides, live carolers, and appearances by Santa. The historic downtown will be aglow with holiday lights as you explore unique shops and restaurants. For 2022, Advance registration and tickets are needed for carriage rides.

Nov. 24: Chicago Thanksgiving Parade. 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Parade runs along State Street, from Ida B. Wells Drive to Randolph. A Chicago tradition for 88 years! Get there early to save your viewing spot. VIP reserved seating is available through ticket purchase.  

Nov. 25 – Jan 1: Chicago CTA Holiday Trains. All aboard! These decked-out holiday trains start running the Friday after Thanksgiving. The schedule for 2022 is still in process at the time of this post, please check the website to plan your ride!

Nov. 25: Arlington Heights Tree Lighting Celebration, North School Park, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Take in the sights with trolley rides through downtown and enjoy live entertainment.

Nov 25 – Dec 31: Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo. More than a million holiday lights! Check the website to confirm hours and attractions.

Dec. 8: Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, Gurnee. A dazzling sight! The illuminated, 14-car freight train will stop by Viking Middle School, 4460 Old Grand Ave. Train arrives at 5:10 p.m. A free, 30-minute live concert will take place from an open freight car. (Entertainment only; no rides are given.)
